Each year Oakland County districts are asked to nominate candidates for this award.Guzynski's nomination came from colleague Jene Wolynski, "I could write extensively about Amy's gifts as a teacher and as a leader," said Wolynski."But Amy's true greatness, I believe, lies in her character. Amy brings her whole heart to the classroom and to anyone who is fortunate enough to know her."

Oh! What a Surprise
Surprised by members of Kensington Church, Hiller students were treated with a Easter Egg hunt earlier this week.
Under blue skies and lots of sunshine, students searched the garden area for the colorful eggs full of candy treats.
"This is so much fun," said one of the students. "Our teacher told us if we worked hard in our classroom, we'd get a great surprise, boy was she right."
"We feel so fortunate and would like to thank Kensington Church and their volunteers who were here today," said Jen Cumiskey, Principal at Hiller Elementary. "This Easter Egg hunt sure put a lot of smiles on our students faces, many of them experiencing an egg hunt for the first time in their lives."

Learning Achievement Coalition – Oakland
The Learning Achievement Coalition - Oakland (LAC-O) is a collaboration between the twenty-eight school districts in Oakland County Michigan, Oakland Schools (Intermediate School District), Oakland University, and the University of Michigan dedicated to improving achievement for all students, especially students of color, students from poverty and non-traditional learners. Together we seek to provide access to high quality curriculum, effective instruction and engaging learning environments for all students.
The collaboration began in 2007 and strives to use regional and local data to increase awareness of disparities in achievement between student groups and to collectively focus resources of students, parents, educators, and community together to attend to three goals for students:
Printed on the pages of this booklet, the reader will find a series of poems written by an amazing group of students who, only a few years ago, possessed a minimal level of spoken and written English competency.
Over the past few years, each of these young adults has made both a physical and emotional journey to the United States, leaving behind a dearly beloved country and culture which the majority of them may never again have an opportunity to visit.
They have had to deal not only with changes in language and lifestyle, but also changes in landscape, residence, and friendships.
With that said, I invite you to enjoy the biographies and poetic responses to life presented within the covers of this simple booklet. The discovery will now be yours as you read their poetry and see that it works-just as all good poetry should- giving us that universal feeling of understanding and camaraderie, and forcing us to re-examine how we look at our own lives.
Extending a hand in friendship, Andrea Gordon, ESL Teacher Lamphere High School Spring 2012
