More Lamphere students than ever were awarded scholarships in 2013 from the Lamphere Scholarship Fund. 

 "This year we presented 30 graduating students with scholarships to help make their dream of a college education come true," said Marsha Pando, Lamphere's Superintendent. "With the support of so many people, our staff, Board of Education, local businesses and the entire community our scholarship fund has awarded more than $125,000 since its inception in June 2007. Thanks to everyone's generosity and support, the Lamphere Scholarship Fund continues to grow and we look forward to helping even more students continue their education in the years to come."

The Learning Achievement Coalition - Oakland (LAC-O) is a collaboration between the twenty-eight school districts in Oakland County Michigan, Oakland Schools (Intermediate School District), Oakland University, and the University of Michigan dedicated to improving achievement for all students, especially students of color, students from poverty and non-traditional learners. Together we seek to provide access to high quality curriculum, effective instruction and engaging learning environments for all students.

The collaboration began in 2007 and strives to use regional and local data to increase awareness of disparities in achievement between student groups and to collectively focus resources of students, parents, educators, and community together to attend to three goals for students:

• Quality relationships focused on learning
• Improved adolescent reading comprehension
• Algebra I proficiency by the end of ninth grade.

Kindergarten Enrollment Age Changes
Effective for the 2013-14 School Year

Parents have choice in enrollment date

Legislators have changed the law relating to the age that children may enroll in Kindergarten, ultimately resulting in children being five when they begin school.  This law will be phased in as follows:

• The student must be 5 years old by November 1, 2013 for the school year beginning September 2013.
• The student must be 5 years old by October 1, 2014 for the school year beginning September 2014.
• The student must be 5 years old by September 1, 2015 for the school year beginning September 2015.

Parents should be aware that even though the law has changed, parents still have the right to enroll their child in Kindergarten as long as they will be 5 years old by December 1, AND they notify the district by June 1 that they intend to enroll their child in kindergarten.

Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2013 school year will take place on March 20, 2013 at 6:30 for all our elementary schools.  Please plan to attend if you have a child who will be 5 years old by December 1, 2013.

Hiller Elementary has been named a Silver Award winner by the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC). Congratulations to Katie McConkie, Lamphere's Director of Food Service and the staff and students of Hiller on this accomplishment of being recognized as a healthy school by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Hiller Elementary School is making national news by working to support and improve the health of our children and our community. As part of their effort, healthy items are featured on their menus and physical education and activity emphasized. Their efforts are part of the Healthier US School Challenge. 

"Working with students and teaching them about making healthy choices at Cooking Club is one example of activities we encourage students to participate in," said McConkie. "Providing opportunities to prepare and taste different foods opens up a whole new world for our students and their families."  Read more
